Dieters across the United States have turned to diet sodas since their inception in an attempt to still enjoy their favorite beverages while they lose weight. Diet soda makers encourage this association, touting their diet options as healthier choices than traditional sodas with sugar, but a recent French study indicates that diet soda may be worse for you than anyone suspected.
The 14-year study focused on a group of 66,000 French women, some of whom drank diet soda, some of whom drank regular soda, and some of whom drank only unsweetened fruit juice. The study hoped to discover a link between type 2 diabetes and the various drinks, but the results were surprising, notes the makers of natural weight loss supplement, Healthe Trim.
Incidents of type 2 diabetes were higher among both types of soda drinkers than among juice drinkers, but the women who consumed diet sodas had a higher risk of contracting diabetes than even the regular soda drinkers. Though the study did admit there could be other factors involved in the women's diabetes, the correlation was strong enough to warrant the opinion that the diet sodas were a contributing factor.
