Travel executives from Best Western International, Hotel Association of Canada and the Canadian Automobile Association(CAA) forecast moderate steady growth in the leisure travel industry at the eight annual Leisure Travel Summit in Toronto.
With Best Western tracking a five to six percent growth in summer hotel rates and room nights for its 200 hotels in Canada, the brand is predicting a steady summer travel season. While the numbers are positive for summer travel, Dorothy Dowling, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Best Western says the 2013 calendar will impact leisure travel this summer, With the timing of Canada Day and Labour Day this year, the numbers are not quite as strong as last year in terms of inbound American travel, but they are still moderately positive over last year.
Mobile technology and social media continue to gain traction with consumers and is changing how consumers research, book and share their travel experiences says Tony Pollard, president of the Hotel Association of Canada. In 2006 26 percent of leisure travelers were using the internet to book travel, today it is 60 percent. In 2009 social media didnt register on our annual surveys. Today, one in four Canadians are using social media with regards to their travel. When asked how consumers are using mobile technology Dowling said, Consumers are using mobile technology to research and plan their travel but we are not seeing this convert to bookings. We are however seeing an increase in click to call.
The benefits of multi-generational travel as well as its impact on the travel industry, from the types of hotel rooms required to the increased complexity in booking travel, was cited by all three panelists as a significant trend impacting the travel industry. While we have known that travel brings families closer, a recent study by the U.S. Travel Association, traveleffect.com, validates those beliefs, says Dowling. One of the statistics that I found most compelling is that 62 percent of adults surveyed say their earliest memories were of family vacations taken when they were between the ages of five and ten.
The impact of boomers on travel is not a new story, but one that continues to gain momentum across the travel industry, noted Brenda Kyllo, CAA vice president of travel. Fortunately for the travel industry boomers are social animals and they like to travel in packs. They like to travel with groups of friends and family to celebrate holidays and special occasions which has lead to the increase we see in multi-generational travel, womens tours and themed tours. One of the newest traveling groups is an interesting mix of boomers and women called PANKS, Professional Aunts with No Kids. PANKS are professional women who have built up their resources and chose to take their nieces and nephews on vacations, added Kyllo.
One of the trends that Best Western has been tracking for a number of years, which is now coming to the forefront in the travel industry, is the power of women says Dowling. The she-conomy, is about the power of women as decision makers. Seventy-five percent of the wealth in North America is controlled by women because they control not only their money, but that of their husbands and parents. Women are the decision makers when it comes to both leisure and business travel spending. At Best Western, this is something we are very aware of and have structured our programs and promotions to speak directly to women.
All three panelists agree that tourism is key to economic growth in Canada. While the Canadian government has made some inroads in attracting tourism to Canada by investing in visa processing, new air access agreements with places like Brazil and improving the border infrastructure, there is a lack of funding to market Canada according to Pollard. The Canadian Tourism Commission budget to market Canada has gone from $100 million two years ago to $52 million this year. This has resulted in a $17.2 billion travel deficit because Canadians are leaving the country to travel internationally. In addition, 80 percent of the usage of hotel rooms in Canada is from the domestic market. We have to increase inbound travel, stated Pollard.
Working with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Hotel Association of Canada is launching a grassroots campaign this June to communicate with members of parliament the importance of travel to the Canadian economy and the need for funding to market Canada globally, Pollard added.

Study finds diet soda can increase intoxication, lead to DUI
Medical News Today recently released an article with an interesting finding: the choice of soda used to mix a drink can impact intoxication. The finding, from a study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, was the result of an experiment reviewing the impact of intoxication when people mix alcohol with diet versus regular soda.
The researchers used a small group of 16 people. These participants drank one of three beverages: Squirt with alcohol, Diet Squirt with alcohol and a placebo. The participants then took a breathalyzer test and were asked a series of questions. These questions included an estimate of how drunk the participant felt and whether or not they felt able to operate a motor vehicle.
Findings of the study and impact on New York DUI charges
On average, those who consumed alcohol mixed with regular soda had a breath alcohol content (BrAC) of 0.077 while those who mixed their drink with diet soda had a BrAC of 0.091. The difference was significant, with those who consumed diet soda having a BrAC reading 18 percent higher than those who drank regular soda. While the participants clearly had an increased BrAC reading, they reported feeling no difference in intoxication between the two.
What do these findings mean? For starters, the choice of mixer could mean the difference between a driving under the influence (DUI) charge and a warning. Although the BrAC is different than a blood alcohol content (BAC) reading, a high BrAC can lead to a blood test.
In New York, it is illegal to operate a vehicle with a BAC over 0.08. If the BrAC readings in the study were to result in similar BAC readings, the choice of mixer could make the difference between a DUI charge and a warning.
Why the difference? The explanation goes back to simple biology. Regular soda contains sugar. When going through the digestive process, the body treats sugar like a food item. As a result, the body digests the drink more slowly, allowing the liver time to filter out the alcohol. Diet soda contains a different type of sweetener, one that the body does not treat as food. Instead of treating the drink like a food item it passes the beverage through the digestive system at a faster rate, allowing the alcohol to enter the bloodstream. As a result, the diet soda consumer's BrAC reading was significantly higher not because the diet soda speed up intoxication, but because the sugar in regular soda slowed it down.
These findings are intended to help consumers make informed decisions. This is particularly important since the participants did not report feeling any difference between the two drinks, which likely puts them at an increased risk of drunk driving.
Serious impact of DUI conviction
Those charged with a drunk driving crime should take the allegations seriously. If a charge leads to a conviction, the driver could have difficulties finding employment and housing in addition to facing criminal penalties. Others insist that aspirational imagery is the norm in fashion and men should be looking at the product, not the six pack.
Deadgoodundies.com has been selling a huge range of mens underwear online since 2007 - and the website has always used models to present every collection.
Founder Adam Davies admits finding the right models can be tricky: The New York Times piece talks about brands moving away from the classic hunk and focusing on their crotch. New models are supposed to be a bit hairier, and not just on their head, a bit less polished, shot in more of a lifestyle context than the clever lighting of a studio. Debtors Dilemma Discusses Washington Bridge Collapse and Toll on Memorial Day Travelers
On Thursday, a major thoroughfare between Washington and Canada was taken out by a tractor-trailer carrying an oversized load. On May 24, 2013, CNN reported that the 18-wheeler smacked one of the bridges overhead trusses and caused the bridge to collapse. Debtors Dilemma is grateful that there were no fatalities from this accident. The traumatic event did leave three injured and caused a great deal of costly damage. Along with the cost of repairs there will be lost opportunity cost as the closed bridge will affect the areas economy and residents travels.
The 58 year old bridge, which stretches 160 feet over the Skagit River in Mount Vernon, was reported to be structurally sound, but had been labeled as functionally obsolete. This label is defined by being too narrow or not high enough. The Associated Press reports that federal records lists the bridge with a sufficiency rating of only 57.4 out of 100. The state average is 80. In November of last year the bridge suffered a similar impact. According to reports, the bridge was hit by an oversized truck and sustained damage that was added to the list of repairs need and the bridge was still determined as safe for use by the inspection crew.
In the first mentioned CNN article, Washington Governor Jay Inslee stated that the bridge repair would cost approximately $15 million. The Senior Editor of Debtors Dilemma is quoted saying, "I cannot help but wonder who will pay for this costly repair. Will Washington be able to foot the bill, or will they need to turn to the federal government for financial help?" In March, CNN reported on President Obamas plan for infrastructure improvement which would cost $21 Billion. They cited a report by The American Society of Civil Engineers saying the US infrastructure system had a "significant backlog of overdue maintenance" and a "pressing need for modernization." With the current financial trouble of the US government with a debt of over $16 trillion where will funding for infrastructure projects come from?
The cost to repair the bridge is not the only cost involved. Debtors Dilemma foresees there were also be a significant impact on the businesses and economy of the area, especially this weekend. The Memorial Day weekend is one of the biggest travel weekends for Americans. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation approximately 71,000 vehicles travel the affected stretch of Highway 5 each day and on a busy holiday weekend that number would be significantly greater. Many of those travelers will have to find alternate routes to their destination, change their destination, or perhaps cancel their weekend plans to avoid the traffic congestion and longer travel times. The DOT suggests travelers plan ahead and lists alternate methods of travel across the Skagit River on their site including the railway, ferries, and detour roadways.
This Memorial Day weekend travelers in the Mount Vernon area will be greatly affected by the collapse of the Skagit River Bridge. Debtors Dilemma foresees a great impact on travelers as well as businesses in the area while costly repairs for the bridge are planned and completed.

Helsinki Airport, operated by Finavia, welcomes Vueling to Finland. The Spanish airline Vueling will commence flights to Barcelona on 17 May.
The selection for Barcelona flights will grow when Vueling commences flights from Helsinki Airport in May. Vueling will provide the route three times per week on an Airbus 320. During the summer months, in addition to Vueling, Finnair will fly to Barcelona twice a day, and Norwegian will fly six times a week.
In addition to the Helsinki route, Vueling will introduce 27 new routes from Barcelona in the summer.
About 580,000 passengers fly from Finland to Spain every year. Last year, more than 80,000 passengers flew from Finland to Barcelona. Those on holiday, urban travellers and business travellers will certainly be happy for the smooth connections.

Victims of truck crashes support commercial truck weight limits
The Truck Safety Coalition - a partnership between Parents Against Tired Truckers and the Citizens for Reliable and Safe Highways foundation - recently hosted its Sorrow to Strength conference in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the conference was to give truck accident survivors and their families an opportunity to discuss efforts to improve safety on our nation's highways. The TSC also helped arrange meetings between truck crash victims, lawmakers and representatives from the U.S. Department of Transportation to provide valuable insight about the challenges that people face after being injured in truck accidents.
Perhaps most importantly, the TSC worked with families to help build support for the Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act. The TSC and other safety groups have spoken out in favor of SHIPA because it prevents the further increase of federal size and weight limits for commercial trucks. If enacted into law, the bill would also address loopholes and exemptions in the current rules that allow the operation of overweight trucks and implement a new enforcement system.
There is no question that truck accidents are a real problem in the U.S. According to estimates by CRASH, approximately 4,000 people in the U.S. die each year in accidents involving commercial trucks. One contributing factor in many of these accidents is the sheer size of the vehicles: the weight of a truck not only makes it more difficult to maneuver in traffic, but also makes it more difficult to stop. The problems caused by heavy commercial trucks are not only safety related. Heavy trucks also cause damage to highways and bridges that require expensive, time consuming repairs.
According to a new poll conducted by Lake Research Partners, there is very little opposition to legislation setting commercial truck weight limits among most Americans. Of those polled, 68 percent said they opposed heavier trucks and 47 percent said they were strongly opposed.
Of course, representatives from the trucking industry are likely to regard SHIPA with some skepticism. One advantage to allowing heavier commercial trucks is that they have to make fewer trips to deliver a given load, which helps keep costs down. Nevertheless, as trucks get bigger and begin hauling larger loads, they pose an even greater threat to drivers in passenger vehicles. Limiting the size and weight of commercial trucks can, in fact, help prevent truck accidents and can save lives.

Sex offender registration has dire consequences for juveniles
Since the 1990s, every state in the U.S. has had laws requiring those convicted of certain sex offenses to register with local law enforcement and obligating police to make the information on the registries public. Many states, and some municipalities and counties within states, have laws prohibiting those on their sex offender registries from living in certain areas near schools, parks or other areas children frequent. These laws do not exclude juveniles convicted of sex offenses from registry requirements. A report from Human Rights Watch issued in May 2013 revealed the damage that being included on sex offender registries can do to juvenile offenders.
More harm than good
Over the course of 16 months, researchers from Human Rights Watch interviewed 281 juveniles who were registered sex offenders from 20 states across the U.S. The median age of those interviewed at the time they committed their offenses was 15 years old. The offenses that the juveniles committed ranged in severity from relatively minor, such as public urination or streaking, to very serious crimes like rape. Researchers also interviewed hundreds of offenders' family members, judges, police officers, sex offender experts, attorney and law enforcement members to gather information.
The report concluded that including juvenile offenders on sex offender registries ultimately does more harm than good. While the sex offender registration and public notification laws are intended to protect society, these laws end up running the lives of juveniles on the registries. They are subject to harassment and even vigilante violence. They have difficulty completing their educations, as they are often prohibited from being in schools because they are registered sex offenders. They also have difficulties obtaining employment and housing later in life. Many become depressed and suicidal. Some juvenile offenders end up killing themselves because they cannot handle the strain.
Preventing recidivism?
Sex offender registries are intended to help police prevent future sex offenses by monitoring past sex offenders. The authors of the report say that including juveniles on sex offender registries is based on faulty assumptions that teenagers are the same as adults in their likelihood to reoffend. The report cites studies that show that because of the psychological and neurological developmental stage of teenagers, they are more likely to act impulsively and irrationally than adults. Many of those who are on sex offender registries for acts committed as juveniles continue to suffer the consequences long after they have matured and are in better control of themselves -- and no longer pose a threat.
Teens also respond better to treatment and rehabilitation than adults do. With proper intervention, teens are less likely to reoffend. The report stated that the recidivism rate for juveniles on the sex offender registry was between 4 and 10 percent, compared with about 13 percent among adults on the sex offender registry and 45 percent for all crime.

SearStone, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community being developed in Cary, will be hosting a roundtable discussion on May 14 at from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. entitled "Starting the Discussion." Adult children of SearStone's future residents will address how to start a conversation with parents about choosing a retirement community.

Holiday Travel On Sale Now As Southwest Airlines And AirTran Airways Extend Flight Schedules Through New Years Weekend
Special Fares as low as $79 One-way Celebrate New Service on Southwest Airlines to Memphis, Tenn., Pensacola, Fla., & Richmond, Va.
Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) today announced new service beginning in November to Memphis, Tenn., Pensacola, Fla., and Richmond, Va., completing the planned arrival of Southwests Low Fares and Legendary Customer Service in 89 domestic destinations, including all previously served by wholly-owned subsidiary AirTran Airways.
To celebrate the new service, Southwest Airlines is launching a fare sale, offering nonstop flights starting as low as $79 one-way. These low fares are available for purchase on southwest.com today through Monday, May 13, 2013, 11:59 p.m. in the respective time zone of the originating city.
The new nonstop service offered on both carriers comes as Customers are able to purchase itineraries among the two airlines combined 97 destinations, including international airports, in one transaction.
Beginning Sunday, Nov. 3, Southwest Airlines will fly nonstop between:
- Memphis and Baltimore/Washington, Houston (Hobby), Orlando, Chicago (Midway), and Tampa Bay
- Pensacola and Nashville and Houston (Hobby)
- Richmond and Orlando (AirTran Airways will continue to operate nonstop service between Richmond and Atlanta.)
AirTran Airways will start service between Memphis and Baltimore/Washington, Houston (Hobby), and Orlando on Aug. 11, 2013.
Also timed with the extension of the flight schedule, AirTran Airways will begin new service in four airports in November. Customers traveling in Oklahoma City, Hartford/Springfield, Conn., Louisville, Ky., and Norfolk, Va., may purchase the new service on AirTran through southwest.com.
